Downtown closes a block of Fourth Street, and for one evening it belongs to you and your date.

The street is the dance floor. Matt Hill and the Classics play live, a pop-up restaurant serves dinner with seating inside and along the sidewalk, and the wine and beer come from the Steubenville Grocery Box. It is the kind of evening this town has been missing, and it happens once a month through the season.

Each Date Night brings in its own chef and its own menu for one night only. July's was Chef Ron Carr, recently arrived in Steubenville, who served grilled swordfish with a summer vegetable caponata. Seats at the pop-up are limited, so tickets are worth picking up early.

A dance lesson from Steubenville Swing is included with your ticket. No experience required, just bring your date. Most of the floor in July started the night saying they could not dance.

Matt Hill and the Classics play Cocktail Jazz, New Orleans Brass, Classic R&B, Funk, Soul and Swing. The music sits back while people eat, then opens up once the floor starts filling.

Matt Hill and the Classics return to the Rodeo Lounge at The Hotel & Rosa's Cantina on Friday, September 11, performing from 7:00 to 10:00.

The building has stood on Beaver Street since the 1890s, first as a stop for travelers coming off the Ohio River, later a gathering place for the Pittsburgh industrial families who kept summer homes in Sewickley. It has since been restored as a nod to the American West, with Americana throughout the room and a bar stocked deep in beer, bourbon, and tequila.

Customer reviews return consistently to three things: the service, the kitchen, and the live music. The Hotel side of the menu runs to homemade soups, brisket burgers, and fresh salads, while Rosa's Cantina Kitchen handles the Tex Mex. Portions are generous, and the dishes named most often are the quesadillas, the Black and Bleu burger, and the carnitas tacos.

The Rodeo Lounge is the venue's music room, and it is arranged for dinner and a show. Guests are seated at tables and meals are served in the room, so the evening runs as a full dinner alongside live music rather than a bar set with a band in the corner.

Volume is a deliberate part of how this band works a room. The Trio performs at a level that leaves the room to the people in it, allowing a table to hold a conversation through dinner while the music keeps its place rather than competing for the evening. Clients cite that judgment more often than anything else, and on past dates here it has ended with couples dancing.

The program draws on American Songbook standards, Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and New Orleans jazz. Bandleader Matt Hill has performed for Fortune 500 companies and shared the stage with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists including The Impressions and Little Anthony. The group performs throughout Pittsburgh, Eastern Ohio, and the Ohio Valley, scaling from this Trio to an eight-piece New Orleans Style Brass Band.
