For 80 years, the Seeing Hand Association has been opening doors for blind and visually impaired people across the Ohio Valley. On Friday, August 21, they are throwing a party in the garden to celebrate — and we are bringing the band.
Jazz in the Garden runs from 5:30 to 9:00 PM at the Edelman Garden, 37 South Broadway Street on Wheeling Island. Matt Hill and the Classics will play New Orleans style jazz, soul, blues, and songs that will have you singing along, out in the open air on a summer night. Hors d'oeuvres are included, and it happens rain or shine.
Tickets are $40 per ticket or $75 per couple at https://go.rallyup.com/91bd7a , by phone at 304-232-4810, by email at contact@seeinghandassociation.com, or in person at 750 Main Street, Wheeling.
The garden itself is part of the story. Donated to the Seeing Hand by the Edelman family in 2014, it grows produce that is given away in full — more than 1,200 pounds last year alone, to employees, to the House of the Carpenter, and to anyone who needs it.
Come spend the evening in it. Bring someone. It is a good night for a good reason.
Date Night in Steubenville
Downtown closes a block of Fourth Street, and for one evening it belongs to you and your date.
An open-air dance floor goes down on the pavement. Matt Hill and the Classics play live in the street. A pop-up restaurant serves dinner with seating indoors and outside, and the wine and beer come from the Steubenville Grocery Box. It is the kind of evening this town has been missing, and it happens once a month through the season.
A different restaurant every time
Each Date Night brings in its own chef and its own menu for one night only. July's was Chef Ron Carr, recently arrived in Steubenville, who served grilled swordfish with a summer vegetable caponata. Seats at the pop-up are limited, so tickets are worth picking up early.
You do not need to know how to dance
A dance lesson from Steubenville Swing is included with your ticket. No partner required, no experience required. Most of the floor in July started the night saying they could not dance.
Live music all evening
Matt Hill and the Classics play cocktail jazz, New Orleans brass, Motown, funk, rhythm and blues, and classic soul. The music sits back while people eat, then opens up once the floor starts filling.
